Day 2:
Karatu to Ngorongoro – Lake Manyara
Breakfast at the lodge and depart with packed lunch to Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Ngorongoro Crater is inhabited by almost every species of wildlife indigenous to East Africa including the rare black rhino. In fact, the crater has the greatest concentration of wild life in the planet. It contains a river, several swamps, a soda lake that, from the top, looks like steam, full of flamingos, a forest and open plains. The large bull elephants that reside here have extremely large tusks, due to the rich mineral content of the volcanic soil and its grasses.
The bottom of the crater dotted with watering-‐holes, shelters almost 30 000 animals in an area naturally enclosed by the slopes of the volcano. Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and surrounded by very steep walls rising 610m from the floor. Covering an area of 259 sq. kms, it is considered to be one of the Wonders of the Natural World and is a veritable heaven for wildlife.

The Park is dramatically marked off by lush green vegetation consisting of tall trees of the ground water forest, which provide home to troops of baboons and blue monkeys. Further down, the forest opens up into woodland, grassland, swamps and beyond, the soda lake itself where over 350 species of birds, including the lively flamingo, pelican, sacred ibis, grebe and stork can be viewed. At the southern end of the Park are hot sulphur springs called MajiMoto. Manyara is noted for its numerous buffalo, elephant, giraffe, impala, hippo, as well as a great variety of smaller animals, and of course the very elusive tree-‐climbing lions.
